Humble Beginnings

Andre Coindre founded The Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Lyon, France in 1821.

The first Brothers gathered as a religious family to educate orphans and juvenile delinquents. In 1848, the Brothers established their first overseas mission, an orphanage for boys in Mobile, Alabama. Over the next half century, Brothers’ communities were established across the United States and Canada. It was from the New England Province that the Brothers established a presence in England, purchasing St Columba’s College in 1955 from its founding Headmaster and proprietor, Mr Philip O’Neill.

We are very proud of all that has been achieved at St Columba’s College over a relatively short period of time. With the help of the Columban Community we would like to accelerate the ambitions of the College ensuring we continue to deliver a first class education as well as providing the level of facilities required for an independent school in this day and age.

Our Role in the Development Office

The purpose of the Development Office is to build and maintain relationships throughout the Columban Community and to cultivate a culture of philanthropic support. Our role is to support the School in its aim of providing pupils with an outstanding educational experience.

Fundamentally, we want to grow and maintain links with the wider ‘Columban Network’ whose friendship and support we so greatly value and appreciate. Whether you are an Old Columban, a current or former parent, staff, or friend of the school, we welcome your connectivity and involvement, especially through our e-communications, events, reunions, publications, business and mentoring networks.

We have a purpose to ask for help to support school development projects to enhance the fabric of the school and the learning environment as well as building bursarial support for bright and gifted children from the local community.
